"...someone who dares to believe that they have the capacity to make this a better place."
Rob Moore, Class of 2012
¿Qué paso? This will probably be one of my shorter blogs, as I am battling the final stages of my Nicaraguan flu. I could really use a hug, some soup and my mommy. I have never appreciated air conditioning as much as I do right now, as I have sweated so much that I could start my own river (NO JOKE). This week has been average, as I haven’t really done anything other than rest and sneeze and sweat. It was nice to have the opportunity to rest after a very busy week last week. This week will also be busy, as we will be taking a trip to San Catarina on Friday. Due to the shortness of this blog, I have decided to publish my poem, “Poem from a Nicaraguan Lovin` Gringa.
Poem from a Nicaraguan Lovin` Gringa
Poverty stricken land
Proud Nicaragüenses
Americanized to the tee
Venders selling “cosas” as a means to meet their own necessities
Wanting to rise but remaining oppressed by the constant reminder that “soy pobre”; the harshest reality of all
Animals grazing, children starving, government needs to do more
How much more? How can we help? Where do we even begin? Should the land be exploited and a new market created within it? All of the questions swarm around in my head
Riding in a minibus with air-conditioning on the way to learn how it feels to live this Nicaraguan life by laying aside our American lifestyle for the chance of trying to understand their reality
Gazing at the hills and the mountains wondering when it all will change
The poverty, the sickness, the uncertainties
Even with this: I STILL BELIEVE
Challenging the Nicas to rise above “somos pobres” and to claim the wealth that is theirs
I STILL BELIEVE
That the Revolution was not in vain
I STILL BELIEVE
That the best is yet to come
I STILL BELIEVE.
